This little-known beautiful county has been named as a holiday spot to head for if you prefer a quieter break.  The list, complied by thetravel.com, names Berwickshire in Scotland as the place to go. 

Its stunning coastline is a must-see, with the sea being especially important to the county’s past and present.  Dive amongst coral reefs and wild marine life at St Abbs or take it upon yourself to explore the hundreds of hidden bays in the county. 

Coldingham Sands is a particular favourite with tourists, as it has the perfect conditions for swimming and surfing. 

More adventurous visitors may want to tackle the county’s cycling routes, spotting the regional Norther Brown Angus butterfly on the way. Several companies also offer seal-spotting adventures, excellent for keeping children entertained. 

With a history dating back to the 1000s, it’s safe to say that Berwickshire is packed with interesting day-trip potential.

For a dive into 17th Century history head to the ruins of Hume Castle.  If you’re wanting to learn more, why not check out the Eyemouth Museum, which brings the story of Eyemouth village, and its origins as a fishing hub, to life. 

As for dining, your options couldn’t be better. The Jolly Fisherman in Craster is a modern pub, offering guests freshly-caught seafood and views of the Atlantic, plus delicious local ales. 

Another divine seafood location is The Potted Lobster, ideal for those wanting a more up-scale dining experience.  Looking for a place to stay will be a breeze if you choose to holiday in Berwickshire. 

Hotels are plentiful, catering to all budgets and needs. Chirnside Hall Hotel is in a rural location, surrounded by beautiful countryside, and allows guests to stay in a historical manor. 

Or, opt for one of Berwickshire’s many pubs – such as The First and Last Pub in Eyemouth – for a more traditional hiking experience.
