The tiny island of Unst in the Shetlands Islands can lay claim to many of Britain’s most northerly things. The little village of Skaw is located on the Scottish island and is famous for the UK’s most northerly house.

It is currently inhabited by one person whose business is sheep farming. As well as that, the village holds the title of having the country’s most northerly beach too - it boasts fine white sand, clear blue seas and rolling green backdrop.

The Shetland’s official tourism website explains more about the island on which this remote beach is located.

It said: “The beach is of fine, white sand and is backed by a meadow hosting a profusion of wild flowers in spring and summer.

“It faces due east and is well sheltered from the prevailing winds. If you yearn for even greater seclusion, there’s a smaller, even more remote sandy beach at Inner Skaw, a walk of less than a kilometre to the south. There are excellent walks to be had on the low cliffs and headlands in this area.”

So how exactly can those curious enough to make the journey reach the UK’s most northern point that’s 821 miles from London?

Well getting to Unst may seem like an adventure in itself. But it can be reached via a flight to the Shetland Mainland.

Then travellers will need to make their way to Toft which is about 28 miles north of Lerwick and from there you catch a ferry to Ulsta in Yell, which takes about 15 minutes.

In order to reach Unst though you must then travel 18 miles from the Ulsta ferry terminal in the far south of Yell to the Gutcher terminal, to the north east. The ferry from Gutcher in Yell to Belmont in Unst takes around 10 minutes.

And those who have made the journey have been having their say on travel review website Tripadvisor after paying the island’s Hermaness National Nature Reserve a visit.

One said: “A breathtaking landscape with cliffs and bird colonies. The moor is beautiful also. It takes at least 3 hours to walk around this enchanted corner of the world.

“The lighthouse is the most northerly point in the Shetland Islands. The view of this small island and its headland is magnificent.”

They added: “An experience not to be missed. Be sure to dress warmly in April. The wind is cold and blows through everything.

Another said: “Simply glorious, it’s a good walk across some sensational scenery. Most is along boardwalk but some among boggy grass. You will be rewarded by a view you’ll not forget, on a good day of course.”
