The Balkan Express winds its way from the capital of Serbia to Montenegro's Adriatic coastline in a little over 10 hours. It passes over 435 bridges and through a number of tunnels as it travels past mountains, lakes and coastlines.

Linking Belgrade to either Bar or Budva in Montenegro, the 12 hour journey also takes in the Rijeka Viaduct, 650ft above ground level.

The 296 mile long scheme was unveiled in 1952, with works completed in 1975. It was officially opened by Yugoslavia's leader Tito in May 1976.

According to Minimalist Journeys, trains run twice a day in either direction, with one departing in the morning and arriving in the evening.
